A CHOIR that has been singing in the county town for more than 70 years is looking for new members to lend their voices.

The Casterbridge Male Voice Choir has enjoyed a long and successful history in Dorchester dating back to 1941.

Over the decades members have helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities and good causes, something the choir is extremely proud of.

In a bid to attract new members to help keep up the good work, the choir is holding an open evening on Wednesday, March 18.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the choir is invited to come along to St Mary's Church Hall in Edward Road from 7.15pm to see for themselves what it is all about.

They will be able to join in or simply listen and see if it is for them.

Publicity officer Joe Mercer said: "The choir has a varied repertoire, which includes popular songs, opera, spirituals, religious songs and songs from shows, and is one of the most popular ensembles in Dorchester.

"The choir sang in two concerts in Cornwall last year and has a full programme of concerts this coming year."

The choir is open to all men, with no auditions required for anyone wanting to join.

Mr Mercer urged people to come along to the open evening and find out more.

He said: "The choir is inviting men to come along to the open evening to listen to see what the choir does and let them join in to see if they want to be a part of it.

"The choir is very easy-going and very sociable and partners can get involved in the social events.

"No previous choral experience is needed and there are no embarrassing auditions to become a member."

The choir meets every Wednesday evening at 7.15pm at St Mary's Church.

The Casterbridge Male Voice Choir has always been keen to support local good causes and fundraising efforts, which included a fundraising concert in 2012 for the Dorset County Hospital Digital Mammography Appeal.
