A CHICKERELL schoolboy has won a competition challenging children to make a wizard out of waste materials.

Harrison Crawford, who is in reception at Chickerell Primary Academy, was chosen as one of the winners for his creative use of recyclable items.

The Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) launched a competition and asked eight schools to transform objects that can be recycled using the Recycle for Dorset collection service into their own wizard characters.

Primary school children across Dorset cast a spell over the county by conjuring up their own 'waste wizards' out of everyday items.

A spokesperson for DWP said primary school children in Weymouth, Portland and West Dorset dazzled judges with their creations.

The DWP's Waste Wizard competition helps children learn about the magic of recycling by firing their imaginations and involving their parents are carers in their ideas.

Each school picked winners from Keystages one and two to be judged for the two top prizes, all of whom the will be given a tour of a recycling plant and composting facility to see how their waste is turned into new products.

A spokesperson for DWP said: "The DWP was dazzled by the children's imaginative and creative use of household materials to craft some spectacular sorcerers."

Alongside wizard winner Harrison, was year five pupil, James Moorhouse, from Sherborne Primary School.

Harrison's wizard was created using a paper bag, a cardboard tube, bottle tops, yoghurt pots and a plastic biscuit carton.

James’s wizard was made using an egg carton, paper cups, newspaper and cardboard.

Cllr Jean Dunseith handed Harrison his prize and Cllr Terry Farmer handed James his.

The schoolboys were also presented with eco packs filled with fun, environmentally friendly goodies by the DWP’s own Walter the Waste Wizard.
