A MAN who threatened members of staff and caused substantial damage to a shop in Weymouth in an ‘unprovoked attack’ is being sought by police.

Dorset Police have released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place in the Londis store on Westham Road last Saturday evening.

A man, who staff believe may have been drinking, entered the store and acted in a threatening manner towards employees before attacking the displays and till area after they refused to serve him, police have said.

A substantial amount of damage was caused inside the store.

Sergeant Andy Jenkins, of Weymouth police, said: “This was an unprovoked attack and the offender’s behaviour was completely unacceptable.

“I am releasing this CCTV image as I would like to speak to this pictured man in relation to this incident.

“I urge anyone who recognises him to contact me in confidence.”

Manager of the Londis store on Westham Road, Dave Hiscutt, said the incident was a ‘very scary experience’ for the staff.

He added: “A man came in the store; staff believed he was too drunk to be served and so they quite rightly refused to serve him.

“The man decided to respond in a very aggressive way and began punching certain items of equipment in the store.

“This wasn’t a nice experience for the staff and whatever the reason behind the incident, this man needs to be spoken to by police and dealt with in the appropriate manner.”

Mr Hiscutt added that it was difficult to put a figure on the amount of damage caused to the store and that he was awaiting an estimate on how much the damage would cost to put right.

He said: “A large amount of damage was caused to the store for just refusing to serve a customer.

“An e-cigarette stand was punched and although it is not broken it will need repairing, among other equipment in the shop.

“I would urge anyone who may be able to help identify the man involved to get in touch with the police.”

The incident happened at 7.50pm on Saturday, October 3.
