FROM kites to the peculiar Dorset pastime of knob-throwing, there's plenty to do in Dorset this Bank Holiday weekend.

Today (Sat) is the first day of the Weymouth Kite Festival on the beach with things to do and see from 10am-5pm. The event continues with the main display flying Sunday and Monday.

Lyme Regis Fossil Festival is also in full swing, an annual family event.

Enjoy walks, talks, theatre, music, comedy, exhibits and lots of hands-on science for all ages. The Fossil Fair offers fun and rare fossils, minerals and jewellery.

The dressing of the Upwey well takes place today, with the community coming together to dress the well in a theme in aid of local charities.

The well dressing should last throughout May but will be at its best throughout the weekend.

The spring at Upwey is the largest in the south of England and well dressing was introduced in 1986.

Dorset Knob biscuits will be lobbed as part of the Frome Valley Food Festival at Cattistock tomorrow.

The festival will run from 10am until 4pm. Admission prices £4 per adult under 12’s free. See a separate story here about this event.

Tomorrow (Sun) also sees the first day of the Merry Medieval May Day festival at Maumbury Rings in Dorchester (12pm-2pm).

Visitors to the historic site will be able to enjoy a range of events including living history displays, cooking, spinning, weaving and arena combat displays with a chance to also take on the May Pole with a Wessex twist. It continues Monday.

The Sherborne Abbey Music Festival will be hitting all the right notes with music fans this weekend and continues until May 3.

Around 70 per cent of performances during the festival are free entry.

Meanwhile it's Tiger Day today at The Tank Museum, Bovington when the famous tank Tiger 131 will be in action.

The tank is the only running Tiger 1 tank in the world and will make an appearance in the Kuwait Arena at 1.30pm.

The Museum will open at 10am with a range of Second World War talks and tours taking place throughout the day including the opportunity to get close to Tiger. See tankmuseum.org for more information.

Music fans should head down to the quay in Weymouth on Sunday where the Rendezvous is hosting another outdoor live gig.

Tea on the Quay, starts at 11am with outdoor music until 10pm.

There's also live music outside The Boot in Weymouth today and tomorrow, the Lazy Lizard hosts Spring Break tomorrow, and there'll be music and ale at the Upwey Beer Festival at The Royal Standard this weekend.

The Teddy Rocks music festival is also on in Blandford this weekend.

It is a charity-supporting event and bands over the next few days include Don Broco, Gentleman's Dub Club, The King Blues, and From The Jam.

Blandford's Georgian Fayre will take you back in time on Monday from 10am to 6pm.

More than 30,000 people are expected to descend on the Georgian town, where the streets will be closed off and there will be a huge street fayre and market. See blandfordgeorgianfayre.co.uk
