FRIENDS from Dorchester who attended every England game during the 1966 World Cup have shared their memories for a TV documentary.

Jim Prowse, 73, and Richard Mesney, 79, were able to get tickets for all of the tournament games held at Wembley for under £10 and were in attendance for England's 4-2 win over West Germany in the final.

Now, to mark the 50th anniversary of England's greatest sporting success story, Jim and Richard are set to appear in ITV documentary '1966 - A Nation Remembers' on Saturday.

Jim travelled along with Richard from Dorchester to see each of the England games throughout the tournament and celebrated his 23rd birthday on the day that the team scored their iconic victory in the final.

"It was the best birthday present I've ever had," he said.

"The final day was something really special.

"I must confess that I never expected that, 50 years later, it would have such importance.

"I do not think we ever thought England would not get close to winning the World Cup again.

"It has achieved a much greater importance than it had even on that day."

Jim said that the atmosphere in London was "tremendous" on the day of the final, with people partying in the streets.

"We were doing a conga in and out of posh restaurants and no one seemed to mind.

"They said they had never seen a celebration like that since the end of the war."

As part of the filming, Jim and Richard had the chance to return to Wembley Stadium for the first time since they saw England captain Bobby Moore lift the Jules Rimet Trophy.

Jim added that he was "very proud" to have been in the stands on that day, particularly given that there are fewer and fewer people alive who were there in person.

He said: "I still have the programme and my framed ticket stub.

"[The match] seems to have raised in significance because of the lack of success since then."

The programme, narrated by actor Terence Stamp, follows various fans in order to uncover memories of the final and discuss its legacy in terms of British sport.

'1966 - A Nation Remembers' will air on ITV at 9pm on Saturday.
