THE hunt is on to find a new home for a plaque that commemorates the former mayors of Portland.

Portland Town Council recently moved from its old offices in Fortuneswell to Easton Street where there is no room for the stone plaque that honours past mayors of the island, going back to 1867.

It is currently being stored for free by Albion Stone while a new home is found.

The council has approached All Saints Church, Easton, to see if there is room for it there but has yet to receive a firm response.

Cllrs Sandra Reynolds and Sue Lees however, suggested that they approach the Isle of Portland Heritage Trust, at the St George’s Centre, to see if they would house the plaque.

They said that this is more “secular” and lots of Portland’s history is already stored there.

Councillors agreed to ask the centre if they could house it while also waiting for a response from the church.

As well as finding a home for the old plaque, discussions were also held about plans for a new plaque.

The old plaque is full and there is no room for new names. Councillors debated whether to have a wooden or a stone plaque and where it could go.

Cllr Ray Nowak suggested a digital plaque went on the council’s website.

However, Cllr David Thurston said that he saw no reason not to have a wooden one and that there is room for it in the new office.

Cllr Sandy West, who is the current mayor, added that she would prefer a stone plaque for “continuity”.

Councillors voted to explore options for a wooden plaque.

The transfer to the new office is now complete, with some outstanding issues, and Cllr West thanked everyone for their help in making the move possible.

She said: “I think everyone’s done a fantastic job.”
