THE first steps for two development plans for Gillingham which could bring almost 200 new homes to the area will be taken next week.

Dorset Council planners will meet on Tuesday (24) to consider outline planning applications for access to a proposal for 80 homes north of Common Mead Lane with a similar application for access from New Road to a site for 115 homes south east of Lodden Lakes.

The first scheme is being recommended for approval despite almost 130 letters of objection. These claim the site is unsustainable with a lack of infrastructure, that there is no real evidence of housing need and it will add to traffic in the area and lead to a loss of amenity space.

The second scheme is also being recommended for approval by council officers and only attracted three letters – one of which supported the development saying it would be a good opportunity for local people to get on the housing ladder.

Gillingham and District Anglers Association had initially objected to the proposal but withdrew after discussions with developers, Taylor Wimpey.
