A VILLAGE in rural Dorset is experiencing heavy congestion due to temporary traffic lights today (Thursday, September 2).

Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks have been carrying out works on West Street in Abbotsbury since Tuesday (August 31).

In order for the maintenance to be safely carried out, two-way traffic lights have been placed to help manage traffic in the area.

But the lights, set to be in place until Monday (September 6), are causing some delays in the scenic Dorset village.

The route is used by residents and tourists to travel to and from West Dorset and reach popular areas of West Bay, Burton Bradstock, Bridport and more.

Traffic maps show congestion in the area in both directions, with queues building up due to the temporary traffic lights.

Travel Dorset shared online: "We are sorry for the traffic disruption in the village not helped by the traffic management arrangements by SSEN roadworks.

"We are in contact with the utility company to have the situation rectified."

SSEN has been approached for a further comment.
