PHOTOS show crowds gather to witness Weymouth's Christmas lights being switched amid a world record attempt for most elves in one place.
Crowds gathered to ring in Christmas in style with the turning on of the town’s Christmas lights on Saturday afternoon (November 27) despite the cold strong winds caused by Storm Arwen.
Yet the weather didn't dampen the spirits of the celebrations as hundreds turned out to be part of the fun – many dressed in elf hats and costumes as part of the town’s world-record elf gathering attempt.

The lights were switched on at 4pm, following a day of workshops and activities in the town, with revellers treated to live musical performances and entertainments to kick off the festive season.
This Morning's Josie Gibson, dressed in an elf costume, addressed the crowd as she helped the Christmas lights switch-on.
The Big Brother series 11 winner was among the elves aiming to beat the world record for most elves gathering at a place at one time.
Weymouth BID asked residents to dress up for the festivities in the hope of getting more than 2,000 ‘elves’ together in one spot to beat the current Guinness World Record of 1,790. It’s not yet known if the attempt was a success.
One reveller said: “It has been a wonderful start to the festive season in Weymouth. It looked like it would be touch and go with the weather this morning – but obviously it will take more than that to stop us ringing in Christmas in style down here!”
