A POCKET opera is heading to a west Dorset village.

Featuring acclaimed flautist and mezzo soprano Emily Andrews, and David Massey and Francisco Correa on guitars, expect a show filled with fantasy, comedy and tragedy, and immersive, evocative music.

CarmenCo Trio will perform Pocket Opera in Portesham on October 20 through Artsreach, the county’s touring arts charity.

Intertwining music from Bizet’s Carmen with other Spanish and Spanish-inspired music, including Boccherini, Garcia-Lorca, Granados, Ravel, Delibes and Albeniz, CarmenCo bring to life a story which follows the tale of Carmen, but told from her point of view.

Dare you consult the cards with her? What does she think of the men in her story? Did she foresee her gruesome ending? Does she like Bizet’s opera?

Emily Andrews is a passionate chamber musician, performing regularly with her prizewinning guitar and flute/voice duo, The Andrews Massey Duo, which has released three CDs and performed in Sweden, Germany and Italy as well venues such as Wigmore Hall and Kings Place in the UK. When the duo joined up with international solo guitarist, Francisco Correa, CarmenCo trio was formed.

Artsreach is delighted to present CarmenCo’s A Pocket Opera at Portesham Village Hall (01305 871117) at 7.30pm on Friday, October 20 and Sixpenny Handley Village Hall (01725 552812) at 4pm on Sunday, October 22.
