A number of homes were evacuated after a gas main was damaged in a car crash.

Pictures from the scene show a car overturned on the A353 between Osmington and Poxwell early on Sunday. It is not believed anyone was seriously hurt.

Emergency services rushed to a crash on the A353 Grove Hill near Osmington at around 2.24am.

A gas main had reportedly been damaged during the crash.

The road was closed between Weymouth and the Warmwell Cross Roundabout as a precaution.

A resident said: "The car ended upside down on the other side of the road.

"Homes in this area were evacuated and we were taken to the police station.

"They isolated the gas and we returned this morning around 5.30am."

At around 7.15am, police confirmed the road had been reopened.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police at around 2.30am said: "Emergency services are currently responding to a road traffic collision on the A353 Grove Hill near Osmington.

"It was reported that a gas main was damaged as a result of the collision and road closures have been put in place as a precaution between Weymouth and the Warmwell Cross Roundabout.

"There are no reports of any serious injuries.

"We would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding while the closures are in place."

Police provided an update at 7.15am which said: "Road closures have been lifted on the A353 near Osmington following an earlier collision. We would like to thank members of the public for their patience and understanding during the closures."

A spokesperson for SGN said: "The fire service called us to attend the A353 in Weymouth in the early hours of Sunday morning after a vehicle collided with our gas governor.

"Our engineers supported the fire service at the scene and made safe.

"We returned to the area later that day to install a replacement governor and restore gas."
