Now that the weather has turned autumnal, it is that time of year when Sunday lunches come into their own.

As Storm Babet drifts away, this weekend is the perfect time to go grab a hearty roast dinner before exploring some of Dorset’s wonderful countryside and coast.

So here at the Echo we have put together some of the best places to find those fluffy Yorkshire puddings and extra helpings of gravy, according to Tripadvisor.

The Thimble Inn – Piddlehinton

Dorset Echo:

This award-winning pub is situated just four miles from the A35 in the tranquil village of Piddlehinton.

Set in an 18th century thatched building, the team of chefs like to create seasonal menus with all the best local produce.

One happy diner described their Sunday lunch as simply ‘wow’ with big portions and a variety of vegetables.

The Brewers Arms Pub – Martinstown

Dorset Echo:

Martinstown is the place to go if you want a village pub with a nice open fire during the winter months.

The roast dinners here come highly recommended from one review that states the roast beef is ‘great and very good value’.

The White Horse Inn, Sturminster Newton

Dorset Echo:

A small village pub at the heart of the community in Sturminster Newton was shortlisted for our very own pub of the year award this year with a spooky ghost story attached to it.

Apparently, a figure has been seen by witnesses stopping outside the pub and drifting into the wall.

The roasts are have been described as ‘excellent in both quality and quantity’ and the food in general is ‘first class’.

The Royal Oak, Milborne St Andrew

Dorset Echo:

This pub’s location in Milborne St Andrew makes it popular with walkers and has the prestige of being voted the best Sunday lunch in Dorset.

A recent customer was happy with their meal as they considered it ‘the best roast’ they had ever eaten in a pub – along with a recommendation for the sticky toffee pudding.

The Elm Tree Inn, Langton Herring

Dorset Echo:

This 17th century village pub sits just outside of Weymouth on the Coast Road to Bridport and is full of character and history - once upon a time being frequented by smugglers, it is said to be haunted.

A recent visitor said: “We recently came here for a Sunday roast and it was one of the best I’ve ever had.”

The Sun Inn, Lower Burton, Dorchester

Dorset Echo:

This family-owned free house with a carvery five days a week, plus daily specials and an extensive wine list and real ales, is in Lower Burton just outside Dorchester.

Generous portions of gammon and beef plus lots of gravy made one reviewer say’ I don't think I have ever had a roast dinner of such good quality in a pub’. It's definitely worth a try.

The Wise Man Inn, West Stafford

Dorset Echo:

Traditional village pub meets rustic gastro cuisine in the heart of the village of West Stafford, only two miles from Dorchester.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor said: "Excellent Sunday roast dinner, very tasty and a lovely pub and atmosphere highly recommend! Will 100% be going again soon."

Clavells Restaurant, Kimmeridge

Dorset Echo:

A ‘perfect Sunday roast’ can be found at this restaurant in Kimmeridge where some happy eaters said their meals were cooked to ‘perfection’.

The restaurant has a ‘field to fork’ ethos having been part of a family that has farmed in the area since the 1950s. It offers locally sourced food in a relaxed style.
