“Flooding can be caused by rivers and watercourses overflowing; it can also be caused by drains and culverts being unable to cope with excess surface water on the roads.

“Everyone whose home is at risk of flooding should have a plan of what to do if the worst happens.”

Prior to flooding they recommend keeping a list of useful contacts such as the council or Environment Agency’s Floodline number, stock up on sandbags or air bricks, and make a flood kit containing a torch, batteries and medication, ideally stored upstairs.

When flooding starts they say to make sure to stay alert as events can change quickly and move upstairs or to higher ground. If flood water enters the home, switch of the gas, electric and water. Also be prepared to leave the property if an evacuation is called.

If travelling through a flooded area, make sure not to drive through standing water as there could hazards under the water’s surface as well as causing damage to your car.

Walking through floodwater can also be dangerous, as the force of the water could easily knock people off their feet.
