IT will be a hair-raising adventure for a doctor hoping to prove he has the world's best mullet.

Dr Alastair Bush, 45, a GP in the army camp in Bovington, is aiming to win the World Mullet Championships at a festival in Australia.

He took on the iconic 80's hairstyle during lockdown in 2020 after his nephew showed off his mullet.

The pair then stumbled upon the Mulletfest competition on the internet and Alastair decided to make it his goal to compete.

He said: "It was around Christmas in 2020, during lockdown my nephew grew a mullet.

"I thought it was a cool idea, we started googling and found out there was a whole festival.

"The idea caught my fancy and I thought that would be a project and I would try and get myself there in a couple of years time.

"After a few years, I decided to start raising money for testicular cancer as well.

"As I work for the army, all of my patients are guys in their twenties or thirties and it is something that affects them, they need to know about it."

Used to a shorter hairstyle, Alistair admitted after two years of sporting an award-worthy hairstyle, he is beginning to have "had enough" of it.

"I like it, I must admit after two years I am beginning to have had enough of it though.

"So after the competition in December, it'll be getting cut and I will go back to my short back and sides.

"I think it will be a fitting end to the journey."

The World Mullet Championships will begin on December 2, 2023, with competitors travelling from all over the world.

Alastair travelled to Australia for a heat in February and was "shocked" when he won his heat and was invited back to the final in December.

Ahead of the final, Alastair is raring to represent the UK against the Australians and says that winning would feel like retribution for Australia's success in The Ashes.

He added: "It would be fantastic.

"There is a bit of national pride involved, Australia is the natural home of the mullet, it would be a bit like The Ashes, like retribution for the 1882 Ashes series.

"To beat the Aussies at a mullet competition would be absolutely legendary.

"To beat them at their own game I would feel extremely proud.

"If I win I will burn the mullet, put it in an urn and send it back to Australia, so it would be like a second Ashes."

Alastair has set up a JustGiving Page and is raising money for Testicular Cancer UK.
