A pub in Weymouth is celebrating a successful few months of fundraising in honour of a beloved quizmaster who passed away last year.

Selina Richardson, landlady of the Globe Inn, decided with her work team to host a charity quiz night on January 28 in honour of John Gibbs who died on December 9 after a long battle with cancer.

The fundraiser was extended until the end of the six nations with people making donations to have homemade pies and whoppers prepared by a regular during the matches.

Mr Gibbs hosted regular quizzes at the Inn on Sundays for eight years and was loved by locals and staff.

Selina said: “John was an extremely lovely man, a true gentleman, always there to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it. I have known John for over ten years and always looked forward to a chat and a laugh when he came in.

“He then became the pub's quizmaster on a Sunday afternoon, John loved being the quizmaster, he loved the friendly banter and Mickey taking, he was very quick witted and always had an answer for everything.

Dorset Echo:

“He will be extremely missed by everyone and will always be a part of our family.”

The team at the Globe Inn chose to raise money for a charity that was close to Mr Gibb’s heart - Weldmar Hospicecare - which providing specialist end-of-life care for adults with a life-limiting illness and support for their loved ones.

Selina said: “We have always supported Weldmar by having a 5p pot behind the bar, but I was completely overwhelmed by everyone's generosity for our charity quiz.

“The day was an emotional day, as a lot of people couldn’t attend John's funeral, it was a very bittersweet day, but I like to think we gave him a send off he deserved.”

Over £800 was raised on the day however one of the customers asked if the donation pot could stay open until the end of the six nations.

At each match, customers were offered whoppers and pies freshly prepared by a regular customer called Jeff for a donation in the pot.

After months of pie-selling in the pub, with all funds raids from these sales added to the pot, they reached a total of £1236.14.

A subsequent contribution from a customer and John Gibb’s family took the grand total up to £1500.  The full amount was donated to Weldmar on Tuesday, March 19.

Selina Richardson would like to thank everyone who has donated to the fundraiser and help celebrate the life of a beloved man.
