Families in Dorset are finding out which schools their young children will join in September, with the majority getting their choice.

From today (Tuesday, April 16) parents and carers will be able to check their application to see whether they have been successful.

According to Dorset Council, 95.8 per cent of applicants have been offered their first choice of primary school for reception. They add that 95 per cent of applicants have been offered their middle school of choice.

Statistics from the council have showed that as of Wednesday, April 10, all primary and middle schools in the county were oversubscribed.

Beth Whittaker, Dorset Council Principal Lead – Best Education for All said: “We recognise the significance of school choice for families, and our team goes above and beyond to attentively address their needs.

“I am thrilled that the majority of families in the Dorset Council area have secured their top preference for primary schools.

“As these students prepare to embark on their new educational journey in September, I extend my warmest wishes for their success.”

Parents and carers can now log onto their online account and see the outcome of their application. In addition, where an email address has been submitted as part of the application, families will be sent a link to get their formal outcome letter.

Dorset Council are also encouraging families who receive benefits to consider what other support they may be entitled to ahead of terms starting in September.

Currently, all children in reception, year 1 and year 2 automatically get free school meals, but a spokesperson from the council said it is still worth checking to see if people are eligible for benefit-related free school meals.

Eligible children can gain further support such as free holiday activities, and schools will receive extra funding to support the child's education.
