A UNANIMOUS vote has backed a new site at Weymouth Rugby Club for the Caddy Shack catering container.

The decision went through without any debate at Thursday’s Dorset Council area planning meeting.

A previous application, on a different site within the club grounds, had been refused last year following complaints by a neighbour.

This week’s meeting heard that none of the previously consulted neighbours objected to the new site which is closer to the clubhouse and further away from homes at the eastern end of the car park.

A report said the new site would not compromise town centre catering businesses and would complement the Lodmoor Trail and Country Park, creating one full-time and four part-time jobs.

Planning agent Neil Williams, for the rugby club, told the committee that there was a large level of public support in the area for the new site and re-opening of the venture.

Emma Ayles, owner of the Caddy Shack, said: "I am totally thrilled to get it. It’s been a long road to get here.

"I'm glad it’s all over and we can get on with running the Caddy Shack as normal. We're looking towards opening at the end of May or early June.

"It has been heart-warming seeing all responses from friends, family and the general public.

"I feel a lot more relaxed now it's going to go ahead, it’s been absolutely great. It goes to show the community comes together when it needs to and supports independent businesses  in times of need."

The 6 metre by 2.5metre former shipping container, clad in timber, has been fitted out with kitchen equipment with a serving hatch in one side. It will have seats and tables for customers outside in an area enclosed by a post and rail fence.

Eight public comments were made about the new application – most stressing the popularity of the business, describing it as an asset to the town and a welcome refuelling stop for walkers and dog walkers.

The opening hours are likely to be 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 9am until noon on Sundays.
