A RADIO 1 Roadshow fan called in at Weymouth as part of a fundraising effort to visit 25 former Radio 1 roadshow resorts.

Ayaz Sheikh, of Leicestershire, visited the resort last month in a bid to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

He said the fund-raising effort was a personal ambition from his youth.

Ayaz added: "I visited Weymouth Esplanade for the very first time because it was a Radio 1 Roadshow resort from the their summer 1988 tour.

"As I visited Weymouth on August 31 I reminisced 28 years ago to the day when Radio 1 was there with Gary Davies, at the the Esplanade beach site.

"I had a picture taken on the beach front (including with the lifeguards)."

Ayaz completed his tour of Radio 1 roadshow resorts earlier this month.

Weymouth was his 13th resort to visit out of 25

The Big Weekend grew out of the Radio 1 roadshow, which was first held at Newquay in 1973.

The hugely-popular Radio 1 Roadshow toured seaside resorts during the summer months bringing top DJs and musical stars to town.

In the early 1990s DJ Steve Wright – who now hosts the afternoon show on Radio 2 – came to town with Jason Donovan.

Jason was a massive star and heart-throb at the time, having risen to fame with the Australian soap neighbours, romanced co-star Kylie Minogue and sung a number of chart-topping hits.

A roadshow in the 1990s also featured Louise, who had gone solo after topping the charts with girl band Eternal.

It also featured Mr Blobby, who had his own chart topper Mr Blobby in 1993, beating Take That to the Christmas number one.

Heartthrobs Bros also visited the town with the roadshow, causing many a teenage girl to flock to the beach.
