PORTLAND Gig Rowing Club Juniors competed in the Cornish Pilot Gig Association Championships at Newquay, Cornwall.

It was the second year running that Portland had competed in the event and the crew of two brothers – Charlie and Bradley Colc-lough – Rueben Cranny, James Codd, Henry Arnold, Ellen Smith and Margi Chitty gave a very good account of themselves against some very strong opposition from Corn-wall, Devon and Hampshire.

On this occasion, Portland were Dorset’s only representatives. The team progressed from their heat to the quarter-finals but came up against some good crews to finish fifth.

The junior crew then placed their fastest time of the day in the plate semi-final and progressed to the final and again finished fifth.

Their overall position of 17th out of 23 did them proud and they gained valuable experience for future regattas.

A club spokesman said: “The juniors had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and are a credit to their club.
