BROTHER and sister Millen and Sophia Hurrion, from Weymouth, are both celebrating great performances in the final few weeks of the summer season.

Millen won the 16-and-under title at the prestigious Bournemouth Open, while Sophia clinched the Dorset 12-and-under Girls’ Closed crown.

After a routine 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Ben Wiley in the first round, Millen saw off sixth seed Noah Bradwell 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.

The quarter-final pitted him against top seed Eric Wilson, but Millen kept his nerve and won 7-6, 7-5 playing some very attacking tennis.

He then overcame Finley Bygrave 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 in a very tense semi-final before taking on West Hants player Harry Butler who had come through the other half of the draw comfortably, dropping just six games on the way to the final.

However, Millen was not to be denied as he played his best tennis of the summer to surge to a 6-2, 6-2 success in just over an hour.

After the victory, Millen acknowledged his coach, Brett Townsend of Virgin Active in Poole, who he has been working with for four years, and said: I’m lucky to have one of the best coaches in the region and if I work hard I can hopefully keep improving and do well in the 2014/15 winter indoor series.”

Millen’s good form continued as he reached the under-16 semi-final and under-18 final in the Dorset Open.

Meanwhile, Sophia, 11, has been working with Tom Beach at Virgin Active for nearly a year, and after showing steady progress over the summer she triumphed in the 12-and-under Dorset closed event and is finishing the season ranked number one in the county.

Sophia had to negotiate her way through a potentially tricky round-robin to progress to the semi-final, showing no signs of nerves and dropping only three games on the way to last four.

Playing Carly Hunter, Sophia recorded a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline, though that did not reflect the closeness of the games throughout the match.

The final proved to be an exciting affair between Sophia and Jessica Holloway.

It was a difficult match for both Dorset County Cup players as they know each other’s game well and are good friends.

Holloway won the first set 6-2 playing some very mature tennis and controlling the rallies.

The second set saw Sophia play more consistently with more patience and she was rewarded with a 6-1 scoreline.

To decide the title the girls played a 10-point tie-break, and although Sophia opened up an 8-5 lead her opponent fought back to 9-8.

But Sophia managed to hit a forehand winner to triumph 10-8.

“I really like working with Tom,” said Sophia. “He has made me more consistent this year and my results are improving.

“I also want to start practising with Millen a bit more this winter, he helps me a lot and often comes along to my tournaments.”
