NIGEL Biddlecombe has given further reaction to his decision to step down as Weymouth chairman.

Biddlecombe, a lifelong fan of the club who will be in attendance when the Terras take on Histon at the Glass World Stadium this afternoon, spoke exclusively to Echosport to explain the decision further.

He said: “The board held its annual vote for chairman and I was unsuccessful, and rather than cause more upheaval I felt it was more beneficial for the club if I stepped down from the role.

“At the end of the day it is a democratic process, the board have made their decision and, as such, I have to respect that.

“The one thing I would say is I am not a quitter, I would never have quit a position I was proud to hold if I had been in a position where I felt I could retain it.

“The club will move forward and the board will elect, in a proper democratic manner, a new chairman for the coming year and I hope the club will move forward in the successful and buoyant way it is today.

“At the moment I am still an elected board member, I have not been asked to leave the board. I am going away to Scotland for a week’s work tomorrow and I will be using that time to make a decision on where I personally go, but at the same time I don’t want the club to suffer.“

Biddlecombe has been overwhelmed by the reaction from Weymouth fans thanking him for his tenure as chairman.

Speaking on behalf of the club’s board, director Chris Pugsley said: “From the board’s point of view we are all immensely grateful for what Nigel has done for the club.

“He took over at a really difficult time and he has moved it forward. From my point of view I hope he does stay on the board and none of us want to see him go.”
