CHRIS Pugsley has now been formally announced as the new chairman of Weymouth Football Club.

The Terras’ board met tonight to put clarity on the situation, following Nigel Biddlecombe’s announcement to step down via social media late on Friday evening.

Pugsley had exclusively revealed to Echosport on Saturday afternoon that he was elected as the club’s new chairman, stating that he was proposed for the role by director Pete Saxby and seconded by Alan Pepperell.

But later in the day, Echosport were asked to remove the online article by a board member who stated there was a “breakdown in communication”.

With the club’s website unable to be updated, the Weymouth fans were left in the dark over the situation in the boardroom, resulting in tonight's meeting going ahead.

From that meeting, it was then confirmed that Pugsley would take on the position of chairman, with Tony Greaves remaining as vice-chairman.

Pugsley was previously a finance director at the club when Martyn Harrison was chairman before resigning in 2006.

The accountant told Echosport: “I have taken over because the board of directors have done a fantastic job for the last couple of years and they asked me to.

“They trust me and the fans can trust me in the fact that I will take the club forward to the best of my ability and I am with them for as long as it takes.

“One of my first jobs as chairman is to hopefully keep Nigel on board because he is Weymouth through and through and you cannot get enough people like Nigel Biddlecombe on board supporting the club.

“I am hoping the board we have now stays together for a very long time, we all want to take Weymouth forward and make it the club that it can be, it should be, and has been.”

Pugsley, a former Dorchester Town chairman, also spoke out to reassure Terras’ fans of his allegiance to the club.

He added: “I’m at Weymouth Football Club, I love Weymouth Football Club and I am 100 per cent behind Weymouth Football Club.”
