DEFENDER Jamie Laird is pumped up to progress to the first round proper of the FA Cup, and for him, there is an added incentive.

Should the Terras overcome Braintree Town in the fourth qualifying round at the Bob Lucas Stadium today (3pm), then he and father Craig Laird, the club’s assistant manager, will be in the draw alongside Jamie’s brother Scott, who plays for Preston North End.

“We have joked about it in the past about being drawn together, if we did it would be nice,” the Terras’ central-defender told Echosport.

“I have always had that in the back of my mind, even when I was at Weston and he was at Stevenage.

“To get through to the first round and have a chance of getting a team like Preston would be a great opportunity and add a bit of family rivalry to it.

“Like us, they are a sleeping giant in their league as well, but we need to get a good result tomorrow before we can even look at that.”

And the 25-year-old, who has never made it to the first round before, insists that Weymouth are primed and fully focused to cause an upset this afternoon.

He added: “We have gone through a few things that Braintree do and have given ourselves the best preparation possible, hopefully we can put in a good performance tomorrow.”
