CHRIS McPhee believes Weymouth have an excellent chance of progressing to the first round proper of the FA Cup at Braintree Town tonight (7.45pm) providing they find their cutting edge.

No quarter was given on Saturday as the two sides battled out a resolute goalless draw at the Bob Lucas Stadium to set up tonight’s replay, with £12,500 in prize money and a home tie with League One Chesterfield at stake.

And while the former Brighton & Hove Albion man, now a player-coach with the Terras, was delighted with how Weymouth matched the Iron physically, he believes they are capable of performing much better with the ball in their possession.

“I don’t think we gave the best account of ourselves on Saturday,” the experienced midfielder told Echosport.

“We were a little disappointed in the fact that when we were in possession we weren’t quite as creative as we normally are.

“The way that we have been playing we felt that we should have got a goal. I know that we drew a blank on Saturday against a team in a higher division, but we feel that we can score every week.

“We were pleased with how we competed in a physical way and we matched them in that sense. We knew they were going to be quite direct and if we can compete in that department again and play a bit more of our natural game when we are in possession, hopefully we can get a result.

“We can be comfortable on the ball and we can be quite creative, we didn’t do ourselves justice in the final third on Saturday so we will be looking to put that right.

“They might think that now they are at home they have a great chance in the tie but if we play how we can they might get a bit of a surprise.”

McPhee, who played in the second round with Salisbury City when they took on Port Vale last term, has shown his pedigree with some stellar performances since returning to Weymouth in the summer.

And with his current deal down to the funds raised by Terras’ fans via the Wessex Fantasy Football League, there is nothing more the midfield general would like than to repay their backing with a lengthy cup run.

“The away support has been fantastic so far this season,” he added.

“The fans have always backed us and given us plenty of support along the way, it’s a very tight-knit club from the playing squad to the supporters and the board.

“It’s a nice thing to be part of and it would be excellent to go up there and get the right result.”
