WEYMOUTH 5 DEVIZES 2

WEYMOUTH played hosts to a young Devizes team who have been struggling for form so far this season, and they secured a victory against their Wiltshire-based rivals.

The home side started with good intent, putting pressure on the opposition’s defence and creating several scoring chances in the early going.

Within fifteen minutes, Weymouth were able to break the deadlock with a clean strike from the centre of the D by Kym Young.

Another goal then followed within minutes, when a penalty corner was sent flying into the net by Natalie Halford.

Weymouth seemed to take their foot off the gas once the two goal lead was established.

Poor marking let Devizes back into the match with a goal that saw the visitors capitalise on defensive errors from the Seasiders, and they reached the interval with a tentative lead.

The hosts came out much brighter after the break and sustained pressure gave them numerous opportunities to increase their advantage.

Multiple penalty corners came the Seasiders’ way, as well as moments when it seemed impossible not to score. Eventually, captain Emily Austin forced home an effort from open play.

This marked something of a flurry for Weymouth. Their fourth and fifth goals were then scored in quick succession by Halford and Caitlin Dive but the visitors did grab a consolation to make it 5-2.

Work still needs to be done for Weymouth to protect their defensive frailties.
