WEYMOUTH 8 ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 3

A BLISTERING start from the Seasiders left Aldershot and Farnham reeling, as Weymouth cruised to an 8-3 success at Redlands.

The home side put six past the league strugglers in the first half without conceding, effectively killing off the game before the second half action was underway.

Having recovered some of the numbers lost in the previous week, Weymouth were still without key attacking players Chris Fry and Matt Lawes, although both are due to be available for the rest of the season.

Nevertheless, the hosts did not struggle for goals with three coming from midfielder and man-of-the match Sam Drewitt.

From the off Weymouth looked dangerous in attack. Their high press forced turnovers in possession in the Aldershot defensive quarter, and soon enough, chances were created.

In a repeat of last week’s victory at Trojans, Weymouth’s first two goals were scored by Patrick May, both coming from drag flicks at penalty corners.

Weymouth were then awarded a penalty stroke when Drewitt’s shot was blocked on the line by an Aldershot foot. Steven Membury stepped up and slotted the ball hard and low into the left corner leaving the keeper with no chance.

Drewitt then scored his first of three.

On the attack, May passed left to Drewitt, who struck a sweet reverse hit from just inside the circle, which flew into the corner of the net.

His second came not long after, this time an accurate deflection off a pass rocketed into the circle by Daniel Bowles, picking out Drewitt on the run.

The Weymouth forward line then shared the spoils and veteran defender Michael Westlake scored his first goal for the men’s first XI. Westlake had moved into the midfield to rest a teammate and found himself involved in an attacking penalty corner, flicking the ball accurately past the Aldershot keeper.

Weymouth were guilty of lapses in concentration in the second half, which led to the visitors’ goals as well as three sin bins for lazy challenges.

They did get their act together by the end of the game to add two additional goals and ensure an emphatic victory.

This Saturday Weymouth travel to Havant with a full strength side, a win will likely ensure a top four finish in the league for the season.
