DUMBFOUNDED Terras’ boss Jason Matthews was left despondent last night, after Weymouth were put to the sword by five-star Corby Town.

Despite a consolation effort from Tim Sills early in the second period, the ruthless Steelmen ran Matthews’ men ragged at Steel Park in a 5-1 defeat, leaving the Weymouth player-manager to ponder where it all went wrong for his troops.

“I feel a little bit let down by the lads,” he told Echosport.

“We didn’t address the situation properly and we played a very good team, there is no getting away from that.

“We missed chances at one end and conceded some sloppy goals at the other and it was not a great night at the office. We got away from our passing style, weren’t good enough and that showed in the result.

“They were quite ruthless, took their chances, and we have come away with a hiding.

“Both of the top sides we have played now and we have been soundly beaten. It’s something that I need to address and I will be doing that this week.”

Commenting on where his squad go from last night’s reverse, he added: “I am hurting quite badly, it will be a test of my mental strength now and we will pick ourselves up and go again on Saturday.

“A good few of the lads need to look themselves in the mirror and ask themselves if they are doing things right. We have got away from steamrolling teams at the start of the season and it is very disappointing.”

Matthews also assessed the performance of new left-back Neil Martin, who was thrust straight into the starting XI on his debut.

“Neil had a very tough evening to be fair but I felt he coped with it well,” he said.

“Their wingers were their main threat and they gave us a hard night, but Neil was steady.”
