NEIL Martin is out to prove a point as a Weymouth player, having made his home debut for the Terras last Saturday.

The 25-year-old joined the club on a free transfer from Dorset rivals Poole Town last week, after he fell down the pecking order at Tatnam under manager Tom Killick.

But having reunited with former Dorchester Town team-mate Jason Matthews at the Bob Lucas Stadium, Martin is looking forward to putting pressure on his previous employers in the title race.

Speaking about his time with the Dolphins, he told Echosport: “They were a great bunch of lads at Poole, take nothing away from them, and Tommy is a great manager, but things didn’t work out for whatever reason and I am delighted to be back playing football at Weymouth.

“It got to the stage where I wasn’t enjoying my football.

“I said to Tommy that I had travelled around the country when I was 18 at Exeter. I was sitting on the bench week in and week out and I didn’t want to do that again now.

“He understood that and said I could speak to whoever I wanted to.

“I wanted to be at Weymouth anyway and it all just happened from there.

“I have huge respect for Jase, he is a good goalkeeper and a good manager.

“He wants to play football out from the back which is the kind of football I like to play.

“We get it off the goalkeeper, the two centre-halves split, and the full-backs get on the ball which is what I want to do.”

The Terras’ full-back also confirmed that there was interest from Magpies’ boss Mark Jermyn about a possible return to the Avenue.

He added: “Jem wanted me to sign but I wanted to sign for Weymouth anyway.

“I speak to Jase a lot because we are good friends and he actually wanted to sign me at the start of the season.

“All the Weymouth boys have welcomed me and I know a few of the boys like Chris Shephard and Adam Kelly from when I was at Exeter.

“I have got a huge point to prove really. Weymouth want to go places and have a huge amount to prove as well.”
