WEYMOUTH RESERVES 2 HAMWORTHY REC 1

JAKE Richmond described a challenge which put Jamie West in an ambulance on Saturday evening as “horrendous” as the youngster was stretchered off during Weymouth Reserves' defeat to Hamworthy Recreation.

The Terras manager believed the contest was marred as a spectacle after the incident in the latter stages of the game, and he is thankful that the damage to the young full-back’s knee isn’t as bad as first thought.

Weymouth went on to lose 2-1 and exit the Dorset Premier League Cup at the semi-final stage, despite a goal from Conor Jevon midway through the first half.

But at the time Richmond admitted it was the least of his concerns.

He told Echosport: “It was all overshadowed really by the injury to Westie.

“He went in and got his body between the ball and their player and he had his foot planted.

“His momentum was taking him over but their lad has come in and knee-capped him with his studs.

“When it happened I winced. Jamie hit the deck and was punching the floor in pain, you could tell it was a bad one straight away.

“It looked horrific. I thought he had either broken his leg or done his cruciate and I was 10 yards away from it.

“It was a horrendous tackle. Their lad came up to me at the end and said he didn’t mean to do it, which is fine but he didn’t actually apologise.

“If he says he didn’t mean to do it I have to take that at face value. I’m not saying he set out to do it but it doesn’t make it any less horrendous.

“We stretchered him off and the game carried on but I’d lost interest to be honest. My thoughts and all the lads’ thoughts were if Westie was okay.”

West was assessed by medical staff and thankfully the injury does not look as bad as first feared.

The Rec player also escaped without being cautioned by the match official.

Richmond added: “He had about an hour in the ambulance and they assessed him, thankfully he appears to be alright.

“It was quite badly bruised and they think there might be a little bit of ligament damage but we won’t know for a few days. The overriding thing for me is he is okay because he’s a fantastic lad.

“He is a credit to himself, his parents and the club with the way he conducts himself.”
