DESPITE a bitter north-easterly wind blowing across the River Tamar, water conditions were perfect for the annual Three Rivers Race, which saw Portland Gig Rowing Club taking part in their first competition of the year.

Held at Saltash and hosted by Caradon Gig Rowing club, there were more than 60 other Cornish Pilot Gig boats competing.

The event was a six-mile endurance race against the clock, taking in rivers Tamar, Tavy and Lynher.

Portland were represented by a ladies’ and men’s team, both of which were in high spirits and eager to test out their strength and fitness levels after all their training over the winter.

The Portland ladies’ crew maintained a strong rowing pace throughout the race.

Darren Howard delivered some excellent work as the crew’s cox and he helped them hold their position as they rowed past some tough opposition.

At the ended of the gruelling course they were placed 28th overall with a time of 63 minutes and 13 seconds.

After a quick change of crew, the Portland men’s team rowed to the start line under the Tamar Bridge in their boat Pulpit Rock.

The men also maintained their strength and determination throughout the race, especially on the homeward straight when they had to row hard against the wind and tide.

Cox Howard again worked hard to encouraging them over the finish line in 44th place with a time of 57 minutes and 52 seconds.

The men’s and ladies’ timed results were combined and Portland Gig Rowing Club came 31st out of 58 gig boats.

Demonstrating how their fitness and stamina can transfer to other situations, 17 members of Portland Gig Rowing Club took part and completed the 12km Tuff Enuff ‘Breakout’ endurance obstacle course held on Portland.

The course was very challenging and a great sense of achievement was felt as the team finished together.

Some members are also taking part in the triathlon to be held on Portland in early April.
