SHAFTESBURY TOWN 3 WEYMOUTH RESERVES 1

THE Terras saw their five-match winning run in the Dorset Premier League come to and end at Cockrams.

And Weymouth boss Jake Richmond told Echosport afterwards he found things out about some of his players during the game that has put their position at the club in jeopardy.

After going behind in the first half, the visitors drew level through Josh Tennant before Shaftesbury grabbed a second from the penalty spot on 68 minutes and then a third soon after.

“It was a tough game and a real battle at times,” Richmond said. “It’s nice to play games like that and although we lost I found out a little bit about one or two of my players.

“Some people react badly to situations and you can’t have things like that.

“We didn’t perform as well as we could have. We had a good spell in the second half when we were on top and created lots of chances but couldn’t get a second goal.

“If we had it might have been a different story, but they came back strongly and scored twice to win it.

“We were still creating chances in the last few minutes but a lot of our attempts on goal were very wayward.

“We just lacked that bit of quality in the final third.”

Shaftesbury dominated the opening 15 minutes and it took a while for Richmond’s men to get a foothold in the game.

They looked to have weathered the storm when the hosts took the lead with a goal that had an element of good fortune about it.

A shot that was going wide deflected off a striker and flew past a stranded Ryan Park in the Weymouth goal.

Szymon Matuszewski and Tennant went close to equalising before Shaftesbury hit the woodwork from a free-kick on the half hour.

Weymouth knew they had to start the second period well if they were going to get anything from the encounter – and they did just that.

An excellent team move starting by Jamie West at right-back ended with Tennant racing through to strike home from eight yards.

Matuszewski and Tennant nearly netted a second for the Terras, but their hopes of a sixth straight league win suffered a blow with a little more than 20 minutes left.

Antony Carlile was unlucky to give away a penalty when he connected with a Town player rather than the ball as he attempted to clear the danger.

The spot-kick was despatched and two minutes later Shaftesbury added a third.

Polish midfielder Matuszewski thought he had reduced the deficit late on but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Despite their defeat, Weymouth remain fourth in the league table.

This Saturday they are back at the Bob Lucas Stadium when they host Wareham Rangers.
