DORCHESTER TOWN RES 5

WIMBORNE TOWN RES 3

ALEX Godfrey’s double, the second a spectacular long-range volley, helped Dorchester overcome a Wimborne side who had surged into an early lead.

Luke Woodland twice went close for the hosts in the opening minutes, but the visitors broke the deadlock when Liam Hall headed in a corner.

Wimborne then strengthened their grip on proceedings, Dan Burton-Hemmings converting a penalty following a foul by Craig Michie.

The home side responded well and David Jerrard struck a post before Woodland made it 2-1.

The striker tapped into an empty net following a bad misjudgement by Wimborne keeper Brandon Langton.

And it didn’t take long for the hosts to draw level, Jerrard finding the back of the net with a fierce strike from just outside the area.

However, after hauling themselves level, Dorchester let their opponents take the lead again early in the second half.

Some poor marking at a corner allowed Zach Phelps to head home unmarked.

Woodland and Sam Old nearly equalised, then skipper Godfrey stepped up to the mark to drill a shot past Langton for 3-3.

Substitute Frankie White almost put Dorchester 4-3 up but Langton was able to palm away his long-range effort.

However, soon after, White’s fellow replacement Brandon Huckstepp did score the home side’s fourth goal, though there was an element of good fortune about it.

Huckstepp whipped over a cross from the left and the ball flew over the Wimborne keeper’s head and into the top corner.

And not long before the final whistle, Godfrey smashed a stunning volley past Langton to secure the victory for Jay Keating and Neil Mackie’s men.

The victory takes Dorchester up to sixth in the Wyvern League Premier Division with two games to go.

They host Team Solent at the Avenue next Monday before finishing their campaign at Petersfield Town on Saturday, May 2.
