WYKE SOCIAL CLUB 2 PORTLAND TOWN 8
TWO hat-tricks and a brace were more than enough for Portland Town to secure fourth place in Dorset League Division Two as they demolished Wyke Social Club at Budmouth in their penultimate match of the season.
Sanchez Jansz-Baker opened the scoring on 10 minutes on what was his return to the side after serving for four months in the Royal Navy in Sierra Leone.
This was followed up by goals from Alex Counter and Elliott Gould to give Town a comfortable half-time lead.
After the break, the goals kept flowing and saw a hat trick from Jansz-Baker and Counter to put Town 7-0 up with around 25 minutes left to play.
Wyke Social did manage to reduced the arrears when a slight mistake from keeper Matt Peart saw the ball find the net.
This was negated with a second goal from Gould.
Gould’s goal was probably the pick of the bunch as he beat the full-back and checked inside on to his right foot from the inside left position.
A sublime floated finish then found its way into the top right corner of the net.
There was still time on the clock for Wyke to pull another goal back but the final score was very comfortable for Town who rounded out 8-2 victors and, in the process, guaranteed a club highest finish of fourth place.
They travel to Boscombe today for the final game of the season needing one point to break the club’s record points total as well.
Manager Pete Williams said: “The application was the best it has been all season, we didn’t let them settle and won the ball back high up the pitch.
“The work rate from the forwards and midfielders was absolutely fantastic and shows that pressure really does work.
“Our finishing was excellent even though we probably missed another five or six chances.”
