WEYMOUTH’S Nigel Orme has been invited to compete at the British Powerlifting Championships after a record-breaking display earlier this month.

Orme was on top form at the Midlands qualifier in Stoke-on-Trent, winning both the bench press and deadlift in his weight division.

As well as that, he also set a new British bench press record of 95kg, before just missing out on extending that mark to 100kg.

The 54-year-old will now lift at the national championships in Andover this July, and Orme knows exactly what he wants to achieve while he’s there.

“This is my first time at the British Championships and it’s something I’m really looking forward to,” he said.

“My target is to break the British record in the deadlift, which I already hold, and my new record in the bench press.

“At the end of the day, if you go to a competition and better what you have done previously then you can’t ask for much more.

“You can’t do anything if someone else comes along who is stronger and lifts more than you.”

What makes Orme’s achievements even more impressive is that he has been carrying a shoulder injury since last year.

Another of his aims in Andover is to qualify for the World Championships – if he does he’ll be giving his shoulder a rest before heading to Portugal in the autumn.
