GOALKEEPER Matt Cafer has reflected on his season playing for Gibraltar outfit College Europa, while admitting he still keeps a keen eye on the Terras.

The 20-year-old Weymouth-born shot-stopper has enjoyed an exciting campaign with his current club, which included testing himself in this season’s Europa League qualifying stages.

And Cafer, who trained with the Weymouth squad while he was back at home in March, also scooped silverware overseas by claiming the Gibraltar Senior Cup earlier this term.

“It was a nice achievement to come over here and get some silverware under my belt,” he told Echosport.

“The team I signed for is quite new to the Gibraltar Premier League, it is only our second year in it. It was technically our club’s first major piece of silverware which is a good achievement for everyone at the club.

“With the national team now in UEFA the standard is just getting higher and higher. You get players coming in which you would not have even thought about this time last year, with more pros from England and Spain.”

On getting the chance to play European football, Cafer added: “If you had said I was going to be doing that 16 months ago nobody would have believed you, not even myself.

“I have adapted really well and basically learnt fluent Spanish which is nice. That will help me in life wherever I go.

“I would definitely have regretted not coming out here if I hadn’t done it.”

College Europa can still finish second in the league this season, which could be enough to once again give Cafer the opportunity to feature in next year’s Europa League qualifying, should he stay with the club.

Cafer also revealed that he has kept in contact with Weymouth boss Jason Matthews, as well as keeping tabs on the Terras’ campaign.

“I have followed them all season," he added. "I have spoken to Jason regularly and wished him good luck.

“I think Jason has done a really good job and they were unlucky not to make the play-offs.”
