WEYMOUTH Rowing Club (WRC) were triumphant at the annual Bridport Regatta in tough conditions.

The seas were whipped up by a stiff wind which made racing challenging but manageable.

Every race in the competition was fierce and Weymouth came out on top, winning the regatta overall .

The success was well-deserved due to the high standard and competitive spirit of every crew.

A total of 12 gig clubs, including Bridport, Brixham, Barnstaple, Bristol, Lyme Regis, Langstone, Swanage, Portland, Sidmouth, Torridge, Weymouth and Exmouth, competed in 11 events, giving all ages and levels of competence an opportunity to race.

Notably, Weymouth’s ladies’ B crew achieved a spectacular win, crossing the line more than 10 lengths ahead of the next boat with the rest trailing behind.

Congratulations go to the crew of Paula Bowler, Tamsin Holmes, Heather Bishop, Jill Copeland, Hayla-Charlotte Blacknell, Brenda O’Connell and cox Chris Day for an outstanding performance.

The men’s vets, super vets, ladies’ B and mixed crews all turned in magnificent performances to win their events.

The ladies’ A crew came second, the men’s B, ladies’ C and men’s C teams came third and, even after a mishap, the men’s A managed fifth place.

A spokesperson for the club said: “This was an outstanding performance by WRC in winning the regatta by a substantial margin, 11 points ahead of their nearest rival.

“WRC members would like to thank Bridport for its hospitality and for providing a good day’s racing.”

Meanwhile, there was also success for the Bridport crews at their home regatta.

Bridport’s junior crew maintained their extremely high standards by winning their race, while there were also victories for the men’s A and C crews.

The ladies’ A team came third, the B crew finished sixth, and the C team were fourth.

That was where the men’s B crew also finished, the veterans came home sixth, and the ladies’ vets were third behind Weymouth and Swanage.

Bridport’s men’s super vets, who were making their debut, crossed the line in a very credible fifth – the mixed crew took fifth too. Bridport secured joint third place overall with Brixham.

Some £244 was also raised for the club, with the juniors selling cakes to raise money for new kit.
