TEAMS from a dozen Dorset schools gathered at Rockley Park in Poole to battle for individual and team honours in the Dorset School Games sailing events.

Schools from the west of the county were very well represented, with Budmouth, All Saints, Wey Valley and a combined Dorchester Schools team taking part.

Castle Cove Sailing Club (CCSC) were also well represented and they had winning members in several teams.

Weymouth Sailing Cub had Alexandra Stevenson in the Wey Valley team and Harry Owens in the All Saints squad.

Overall, there was a record breaking number of competitors – more than 80 – going for glory.

Positions were closely contested in the Laser Pico dinghies throughout the Challenge fleet and the Gold fleet.

Although there was not much wind for the morning races, in the afternoon there was 11 knots, something welcomed by several members of the Gold fleet.

In the Gold fleet, a well-designed racing schedule enabled the sailors to compete against other sailors of similar abilities after the first heat. In total there were five finals.

In final four, Lucy Bayliss from Wey Valley finished in second and Finn Hunt, also from Wey Valley, placed first.

In second place in final two was Alexandra Stevenson, another Wey Valley student, while Alex McFarlane from the Dorchester Schools team came home first. Will Adler (Dorchester Schools) was the overall winner in final one.

The top results from each school were combined to crown one school the overall winner.

All Saints finished third, Talbot Heath were runners-up and the Dorchester School combined team came out on top.

The youngsters enjoyed the event, especially the activities between races such as kayaking.

The Rockley Park team ensured there was a friendly but competitive atmosphere throughout.
