DORSET youngster James Shanes has set the world of motorsport alight with some stunning performances in 2015.

Key to the 18-year old’s success this year has been signing for the Kent Kings in British Speedway’s National League, where Shanes has put nearly two points on his average from the previous season.

The experience of being the second heat leader for the Kings has helped the Brit realise his potential – he finished fifth in the British Under-21 final in just his third year in the shale sport.

However, it is on grass where Shanes has been most successful this campaign, with his first major achievement being his victory at the Masters of Midshires in May.

The Puddletown-based rider followed that up with four straight podium finishes in club meetings.

That success was rewarded by a call-up to the Great Britain squad for the long-track World Cup in Muhldorf, Germany.

Despite only being a reserve, it was a great opportunity to be part of a victorious team with experienced riders like Richard Hall and Glen Phillips.

The youngster travelled to the Channel Islands to take part in his first meeting on sand and, after winning three of his four rides, Shanes was crowned Sand Ace Guernsey ACU British champion.

And things got better for him when he came second in his first ever European final in Holland.
