FORMER Lyme Regis member Sophie Keech gave an excellent account of herself as she narrowly missed out on qualification for the Women’s British Open.

The amateur, whose home club is now Parkstone, carded a two-over-par 76 round the Irvine Golf Club, Scotland, finishing two shots out of the running for a play-off to make the Open, which starts at Turnberry on Thursday.

In howling winds and rain on Scotland’s west coast, Keech made the ideal start with a birdie at the first but returned to level-par after bogeying the 290-yard par-four fourth.

A run of three bogeys in four holes around the turn severely dented Keech’s qualification hopes, with dropped shots coming at the eighth, 10th and 11th.

But a birdie two at the 16th proved a fitting reward for her efforts, as she narrowly fell short of the 12 spots secured by the qualifiers, who will now take their place in the 144-strong field for the prestigious tournament.
