WEYMOUTH have been forced to pull their second XI out of the Dorset League this season.

The Seasiders, who had been playing in County Division Three, were given no option but to scratch their last two fixtures with just a handful of players available for selection.

Their third forfeit of the campaign means they have suffered the same fate as Bridport, who had to pull out just weeks into the summer after they also struggled to put together a team in County Division Four.

Explaining the situation, club chairman John Ryan told Echosport: “It’s been either feast or famine with players all season.

“We have had weekends where we've had plenty of players available, then others when it’s famine again.

“Getting people to commit to playing 18 Saturdays on the trot is almost impossible.

“The first team have used more than 30 different players this season and players have had to go up and down from the seconds into that side.”

With the firsts set for relegation from the Premier League, the Seasiders are to discuss whether they will apply to drop down the divisions further next term at their AGM.

Asked whether they will look to reform the second XI, Ryan said: “Yes, definitely, but it will need a guaranteed commitment from someone.

“Tom Steadman, who has been captaining the side, will obviously have to look at it because it has put him through a lot with his business and everything.

“It is something we will have to look at in the close season"

Weymouth are planning to run a family fun day for the club's youth section on Monday, August 31.
