YOUTH champions were crowned at Weymouth Speed Week (WSW) at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy.

WSW has been taking place all week and it is the oldest event of its type in the world.

This is a must-attend annual event for all competitive windsurfers, kitesurfers and sailors from around the world which allows them make their best timed runs over a 500m course set inside Portland Harbour.

The event, now in its 43rd year, is still very popular with three fleets for professional, amateur and junior sailors across the three disciplines.

WSW 2015 was certainly in windsurfer Scotty Stallman’s calendar following his win in last year's junior windsurfing category.

The Official Test Centre (OTC), who which sponsors Stallman, proved an ideal base for him for this year’s competition.

Saturday morning saw the competition start although, light winds on the day prevented the course from being set.

On Sunday morning, the wind looked much more promising with winds building steadily from the morning onwards.

The fleets were all able to take to the water.

Stallman said: “The wind had built up nicely to a steady 20 knots on the course.

"Unfortunately, it was from a south-easterly direction making the water choppy, far from ideal conditions for speed sailing.

However, this was the last day of the junior competition and we all had to sail in the same conditions.

“I soon settled in after a couple of runs.

"I was really pleased that my best runs averaged just over 25 knots over the choppy 500-metrem course. I was the fastest in the Junior Fleet.

“I was very pleased to win the Tushingham Trophy for the Junior Fleet for a second year running.”

Second place in the fleet went to another young and talented local windsurfer, Sam Anstey who also trains from the OTC. Tom Martin finished in third place.

The young windsurfers who took on the speed challenge are clearly very talented and are sureto be candidates for breaking the records in the future.
