Under-17 Plate final

WEYMOUTH 10 SWANAGE 34

WEYMOUTH suffered heartache after they were beaten by a strong Swanage side in the final played at Monmouth Avenue.

The final score does not reflect what proved to be a physical encounter between two evenly-matched sides.

Weymouth had the upper hand in the first half and could easily have been ahead at half-time, but some excellent defensive play from the Swans kept the score at five points each.

In the second half, the visitors started the stronger and took an early lead with a converted try and three additional points from an penalty, but Weymouth were quickly back in the game and a second try from Morgan Wyatt brought the home side within a converted try at 15-10.

The hosts piled on the pressure but again the Swans’ defence held firm and the home side were unable to convert the concerted efforts into points.

The physicality and speed of the game, and a heavy pitch eventually took its toll and the inevitable gaps began to open up.

The Swans looked the fitter of the two sides and, in the last 15 minutes, took control of the game scoring a further three tries to earn the silverware.
