PARK District closed the gap on Springfield A at the top of Division One but suffered their second defeat of the season in the process, losing 18-17 to Wyke A.

It was Park’s John Ryan (9) that top scored on the night and when he beat Shaun Beauchamp (3) to put them 14-10 up, it looked a tough ask for Wyke to come back.

Sai Maganti (7) and Steve White (6) then both won their last singles matches though to leave Wyke 16-14 up with the doubles remaining.

Park needed a 3-0 win for victory in the tie but after going 2-0 down they knew it was all over but showed great spirit to fight back and win the match 3-2.

Another close tie was Budmouth A’s 21-20 victory over Budmouth B which went down to the wire. At 20-17 to Budmouth A with the doubles to play, Budmouth B almost snatched a draw.

However, Sam Millar (6) and Lily Cherry (7) sneaked the third leg to grab the vital point required.

Budmouth C scored a 26-13 win over bottom side YMCA.

Both Jamie Blair and Will Jolliffe scored the full nine points for Budmouth with Ethan Gear (5) also contributing fully.

Brian Hansford (7) top scored for YMCA in beating Gear and taking two sets of both Blair and Jolliffe.

Red Triangle beat Colliton X 22-17 in a match that swung one way then the other. The Portlanders won the first three legs and Colliton the next three. Crucially, Triangle then won the next three to open up too big a lead for Colliton to pull back despite them winning the doubles.

Tony Reed (8) top scored for Triangle and Mick Hogan (6) for Colliton.

Preston B had a fairly comfortable 26-13 success over Springfield C to continue to top Division Two.

Once again, Josh Harman (9) top scored for the table-toppers ably supported by Derrick Smith (7) and Peter Stopforth (7).

Steve Rook and Pete Anderson both hit five points apiece for Springfield.

Gordon Bisset (6) won two of his matches but that was the only real resistance Wyke D put up in a 9-27 loss to Shipton Gorge B.

Derek Wheeler secured the full nine points for Shipton with Brian Cammell (8) and Graham Albertella (7) also scoring well.

Preston C put in a solid performance in their narrow 23-17 victory over Budmouth D.

Neil Hardisty (8) top scored despite being on the losing side with fast improving youngster Tom Lydford (7) chipping in well.

Eddie Chapman and Dave Clegg both notched seven points for Preston but Roger Lovell’s six made the difference in the end.

Pilgrims A started well but Preston A dropped only one point in the last seven legs of their 24-13 victory. Simon Green (9) top scored for Preston with John Hunnisett (6) and Stuart Walden (6) for Pilgrims.

STEPS J brought themselves to within four points of top of the table STEPS M with an impressive 30-8 win over Wyke C.

Jon Clarke, Joe Snowden and Joshua Why all won all three of their singles matches along with Snowden and Why also picking up the doubles for a perfect evening’s work.

In an incredible match, STEPS M won a marathon of a match 27-10 against Shipton Gorge Youth.

The first six ties all went to five sets with STEPS picking up four of them to take a 16-14 lead.

Mike Hall (9) and Martin Singer (8) then picked up 3-1 wins to secure the match win before Les Gardner (7) lost out in his third five-setter of the night to Shipton’s Joachim Wood (8).

The score was made more convincing that it perhaps was when Singer and Hall took the doubles 3-1. Budmouth E produced possibly their best performance of the season in beating Pilgrims B 24-12.
