WEYMOUTH LADIES II 1 GILLINGHAM II 1

ALICE Furness earned a point for Weymouth after levelling with just two minutes remaining of this clash at Redlands.

The Seasiders made an excellent start after an inspirational talk from coach Wayne Goff.

In the first few minutes, Weymouth drove up the pitch, led by attackers Olivia Treadwell and Annalise Dive, but possession was lost early on.

This allowed Gillingham to attack but Annalise Dive intercepted.

From then on, the game was end to end, with Weymouth creating many opportunities.

When Gillingham did attack defender Berni John stood strong.

A great drive down the left by Susie Stone and Furness resulted in a great strike from the former, which narrowly went wide.

Weymouth gained possession and another excellent strike from Claire Thomasson resulted in a short corner for Weymouth.

Another drive up the left by Sonya Hughes and a pass to Jemma Brunel saw another strike at goal but at the interval the scores remained goalless.

Gillingham started the second half with a strong attack but this was stopped by some brilliant defence from John, Carolyn Schofield, Claire Harding and Liv Culbreth.

A fast drive down the left again from Bee Forder, followed by a cracking shot from Susie Stone, narrowly missed but resulted in another short for the home team.

As the action continued at a pace, there was some good running from midfielder Katie Ninham.

A good attack from Weymouth then saw fine team-work between Furness, Thomasson and Jodie Stone and Thomasson saw a strong effort rebound of the keeper’s pads.

Another drive by Gillingham allowed Weymouth keeper Ellie Goff to get some action, which was followed by some superb clearances.

A home attack up the left by Furness, saw her cross to Thomasson which allowed an excellent strike by Jodie Stone but her effort went slightly wide of a post.

In the process a Gillingham player was injured and had to be carried off.

A new found determination from Gillingham allowed them their first short corner, which succeeded in them taking the lead.

However, the hosts levelled following a drive up the middle from Culbreth.

She passed to Caitlin Dive, who showed some excellent skills and then made a pass through the legs to Furness, who followed up with a swipe between the keeper’s legs to level the scores.
