DORCHESTER TOWN 1
Oldring 90+2

SLOUGH TOWN 2
Smith 30pen, Webb 45

THE Magpies were left frustrated as to how they failed to earn at least a point from a match in which they created 16 goal-scoring chances.

Even after the 66th minute dismissal of midfielder Charlie Davis, Dorchester continued to pose the greater threat.

A combination of great goalkeeping by Mark Scott and poor finishing by the Magpies preserved Slough’s two-goal cushion until the second minute of stoppage time when the industrious Matt Oldring smashed home what proved to be only a consolation goal as seconds later the final whistle blew.

But it could all have been so different for Dorchester had they taken some of their earlier chances.

The Magpies made one change from the side that drew against Cirencester Town last time out, with Ben Watson coming into the starting XI for Liam Sayers.

In the second minute, after Shane Murphy had saved a shot from Warren Harris, the hosts broke away.

Nathan Walker nodded down a centre from Neil Martin but neither Luke Holmes or Ben Watson could turn the ball past Scott who did just enough to nudge the ball away as all three became entangled and the followup shot from Davis deflected wide.

At the other end, Rebels’ skipper, Daniel Hicks glanced wide while Lewis Putman sent a low 18-yard drive just past a post.

Scott raced to the edge of his area to intercept a long through ball from Oldring while Charles Mpi twice nodded wide of the near post as Slough threatened again.

A cross from Walker looked inviting but Paul Stonehouse did just enough to clear for a corner with Watson lurking. Walker then sent a powerful header wide from six yards while Harris did likewise as he met a cross from Putman at the other end.

Dorchester were rocked on the half hour when Jake Smeeton was adjudged to have impeded Mpi and Edward Smith sent a well-struck penalty under Murphy as he dived to his right.

The Magpies tried to hit back and Davis sent a 25-yard free-kick over the crossbar while the lively Oldring’s shot on the turn deflected wide and Walker’s header from Oakley Hanger’s centre was saved by the alert Scott.

Walker again headed wide when he connected with Martin’s cross but deep in first-half injury time, the Magpies found themselves with a two- goal deficit.

Putnam’s corner was nodded down by Hicks to Nathan Webb who cleverly netted with a flicked shot with his back to goal on the six-yard line.

Dorchester started the second half in determined mood and a Davis corner found Chris Dillon whose placed shot was blocked then Smeeton’s long-range freekick flew harmlessly out of play.

But an under hit back pass from Smeeton then put Murphy under pressure. Although Smith was penalised for his attempt to prise the ball from Murphy, an disagreement ensued which culminated in bookings for Smith and Davis.

Murphy did well to parry a superb drive from Putman while Scott clawed aside an impressive angled drive from Hanger.

A two-footed challenge by Davis on Ryan Hope was then rewarded with a straight red card by referee Adam Matthews.

While Davis contemplated a lengthy ban, the 10 remaining Magpies fought valiantly to overturn the deficit.

A poor back header from Stonehouse nearly let in the Magpies but substitute Toby Holmes, who had just replaced Watson, was denied by a fantastic double save from Scott.

Murphy showed sharp reactions to dive and save at the feet of Harris who tried to capitalise on a long pass from Smith while Martin curled a free-kick wide for the Magpies.

Another Martin effort flew wide before the winger delivered a corner which Toby Holmes somehow managed to head over from just two yards.

Slough went close again in the 89th minute but Murphy was equal to Smith’s shot.

Dorchester finally gained some reward for their efforts with a stoppage-time goal carved out by substitute Liam Sayers with a clever ball into the path of Oldring who found the roof of the net from 12 yards.
