CARL McClements capped off his “best weekend in football” after securing the Len Mahoney Cup for Snookes as they beat Dolphin 4-3 after extra time at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

He scored the first goal for Snookes in a battling final that took a Ricky Lane strike in extra time to separate the sides.

Not only did he lift the cup for Snookes, but McClements sealed the Wessex League Division One title for Portland United after a 5-0 win at Andover New Street on Saturday – a game in which he also scored.

He said: “It was one of my best weekends in football. It’s always nice to win some trophies.”

After opening the scoring in the 16th minute, Dolphin responded 11 minutes through a Danny Andrews penalty.

Snookes were back in the lead almost immediately as Lane scored two minutes after the equaliser.

But Dolphin kept battling and in this topsy-turvy final, they were level through Robert Maxted just before the hour mark.

Chances came and went for both sides but it was Snookes who kept up with the trend of the tie with their third 13 minutes before the final whistle.

Chris Reader popped up with the goal before Dolphin’s Sean Gulliver took the game to extra time when he netted his side’s third leveller of the match in the 80th minute.

With both sides looking weary, Lane stepped up to be the hero for his side as he won the game just before the interval in extra time.

Speaking after the game, McClements said: “It was a classic cup final.

“Every time we scored we set them back and our chances were the better ones, so I was always confident of the win.

“There was a lot of tired legs by the end and they threw everything at us in extra time.

“But we managed to ride our luck and see it out.”

In the other final played at Weymouth’s stadium on Sunday, Famous Old Spa secured the Les Hallett Trophy with a 3-1 win over Finns.

The game was goalless at the break but it came to life five minutes after the interval when Mark Lambert scored from the spot.

Karl Dean doubled Famous Old Spa’s lead in the 61st minute but Finns hit back to reduce the deficit to one through Ashley Anderson nine minutes later.

However, Famous Old Spa kept their cool and sealed the crown in the 81st minute through Kevin Pace.
