WEYMOUTH’S young players have completed their National Cadet League campaign and finished with another haul of medals.

Once again it was Dorset teams that dominated the winning positions in the Southern Divisions of the under-15 competition.

Bournemouth A retained their title as the top team in Division One, though Weymouth A ran them close in an exciting last day’s play and finished just six points behind them in the table.

Jamie Blair, Ethan Gear and Ben Hannigan finished unbeaten in the fourth round with wins against Bournemouth B (6-0), Mid Sussex A (5-1), Southampton (4-2) and a draw against Bournemouth A (3-3).

Weymouth B went one better in Division Two and won the winners’ medals. The Weymouth team of Tom Lydford, Hector Knight and Eddie Knell started the day only just ahead of Winchester and it was a close finish.

Weymouth could not afford to drop many points and they responded with wins against Weymouth C (6-0), Generation II B (6-0), Mid Sussex (5-1) and Portsmouth (6-0).

Weymouth went into the final match against Winchester needing only one point in their only defeat (4-2).

The Weymouth C team has seen some of the younger players coming through the ranks and gaining experience. Following promotion from Division Three in the previous round, they acquitted themselves well in Division Two and are improving all the time.

In this round, Dorset county player, April Heasman, led an all-girls’ side together with Edith Dedman and Jess Moggeridge. In fact, Heasman was one of the stars of the day winning seven out of her 10 games as they finished fourth in Division Two.

After the defeat to Weymouth B, the girls beat Mid Sussex B (5-1) and Portsmouth (4-2), while drawing with Generation II B (3-3) and losing to Winchester (5-1).

Weymouth coach Andy Millar was delighted with the team’s success. He said: “These players have worked really hard in training and these results and medals are a deserved reward for them and the coaching team who support them.

“The Weymouth team’s progress over the last couple of years has been fantastic and it’s encouraging to know that there are many new players already training to compete next season.”
