DUATHLETE Dave Butt followed up his European silver medal with a World Championship bronze medal in Germany last weekend.

The 61-year-old went to the continent hoping for a top-six finish in his age group, as he had never ridden in a draft-legal competition before.

However, he ran well in the first leg of the race before settling into a fast group on the bike, allowing him to consolidate his podium spot on the last run.

Speaking to Echosport after the event, Butt said: “The race went really well for me. I had a great run and I managed to get in with a fast bunch on the bike.

“I was a bit apprehensive about the bike, but the ride was incredible. The Brits all worked well, but the Europeans sat in behind and they wouldn’t do the work.

“We managed to get rid of last year’s World Champion which was really encouraging.

“I didn’t expect to get third to be honest because the field was so strong.

“But I was really pleased.”

This was Butt’s first World Championship and, despite the costs, it is something he will be hoping to do it again.

He added: “It was an incredible experience. The podium after the race was on a big stage in front of hundreds of people.

“All the roads were closed, the police officers were escorting the lead rivals, and there were cameras there.

“It was exactly like you see in the professional triathlons.

“I automatically qualify for next year’s championships now because I was the first Brit.

“The event is in Edmonton, Canada if I can afford it, so we will just have to wait and see.”

With his big objective now completed, Butt is training harder than ever to improve his performances and is now working with cycling coach Greg Parker as he tries to qualify for the World Time Trial Championships.

“I’ve got a Duathlon in October at Thruxton, but I’m focusing on the bike,” he explained.

“Greg Parker is going to coach me with the time trialling, so I’m going to try and qualify for the World Championships in France next year.”
