WEYMOUTH 3

LONDON ACES 0

WEYMOUTH Beach Volleyball Club set up a fascinating end to the National League Division One season when they defeated promotion rivals London Aces 3-0 at Redlands.

The table now shows that Stockport are certain to win the league and gain promotion to the National Super League, England’s highest level.

However, Weymouth are one of three clubs who could take the runners-up spot and therefore go into a play-off for a Super League place against the second-bottom Super League club.

To make matters even more dramatic, Weymouth’s final match is against champions Stockport this Saturday at Redlands (1.30pm). Weymouth must win and then wait on the results for Black Country and London Aces.

Weymouth’s win against the Aces was a convincing display from the team which were missing two of the regular starting line-up in Daren Harding and Elliott Sawyer.

They got off to a flying start when powerful serving from Ryan Stout helped Weymouth to a 9-1 lead. Weymouth then continued to dominate the play and went on to win the set 25-20.

However, in the second set Aces began to show why they are battling for promotion with Weymouth and took a convincing lead at 12-6.

Weymouth then began to show the experience that they have gained in recent seasons and gradually pulled back the deficit through a strong block which London found difficult to get past.

London still had set points to take the set but Weymouth held firm and then took control with some excellent attacks from man-of-the-match Liam Tewkesbury and Valdis Baranovs to take the set 27-25.

Weymouth took control in the third set and never lost the lead to clinch the set and the match 25-16 and set up the crucial game against Stockport.

Stockport have only lost once this season and have a number of semi-professional players in their squad so this will be a really difficult test for Weymouth.

The squad will be hoping for as much support as possible to cheer them on.
