WEYMOUTH 3

WORTHING 0

WEYMOUTH Volleyball Club got the new indoor season of to a flying start with a very convincing 3-0 win over Worthing in the first round of the National Cup.

New-look Weymouth, who will again compete in National League Division One this season, were always in command against non-league Worthing.

The Seasiders have dropped the ‘Beach’ part of their name as part of a drive to combine both the indoor and beach sides into one club, across all age levels and adult teams.

The only time that Weymouth went behind in this cup match was at the beginning of the third set when they came out a little casual after dominating the first two sets.

A strong word from coach Stuey Jeanes appeared to be what the team needed and they came back from 10-8 behind to win 25-19.

Weymouth displayed two of their new players for the season ahead; Toddy Tofalou who has joined from Bournemouth University, his hitting and jumping power looked like they could be a key factor for the team throughout the season.

Also making his debut was 17-year-old Harry Aplin who has progressed through the club’s junior sections and was able to show his skills when he came on as the libero and looks to have a very bright future in the game.

The club are expecting to announce another couple of strong signings before the National league gets underway.

After the match, Jeanes said: “This was a great first match us for to get the cobwebs out of the system and for the team to get used playing with each other again.

“Considering Worthing were a non-league side they played very well but I don’t think that they had come across such powerful serving as they faced from us.

“We now need to get back to training ready for our next match which is round two of the cup on Saturday, October 7 before our first National League game of the season on October 14th at home to Manchester.”

In round two, Weymouth will play away to the winners of the match between two London teams Wimbledon or SQUAD.

A win in this round for Weymouth would see them have a plum home draw against Malory from the Super League, one of the very top teams in England.
